- To understand the current situation, remember that at the founding of the United States the only federal crimes were treason, piracy, and counterfeiting. Today there are more than 4,000 federal criminal statutes and 10,000-plus more federal regulations that can be rolled into crimes. In the past 30 years the federal prison population has grown from 20,000 to more than 200,000 and many thousands more are on probation or are awaiting incarceration.

Government expansion at its worst! But let's not forget that at the founding it was possible to own another human being as property, unless you were a woman, because married women had virtually no property rights. Also, the entire population of the 13 states was 2.5 million. There was no transportation system to speak of, few factories, no knowledge of public health, no education system, no standing military of note, banking was almost a farce, justice was uneven at best, and massive Constitutional oversights and shortcomings were leading the nation toward a devastating civil war. Pro, you've gotten lazy... Guess I'm going to have to weigh in here more often...

Pro, you've gotten lazy... Guess I'm going to have to weigh in here more often... What does slavery have to do with the current federal government having more than 4000 criminal statutes? Are you suggesting we need 4000+ statutes to keep slavery illegal, and to allow women to vote? Do we really need 10,000+ regulations to run the transportation department, the public schools (which the federal government has NO business being a part of), factories running 'clean' and 'safe', banks being legit (that's a laugh), and justice 'even' (even funnier)? It isn't me that has gotten lazy, it is the Americans that rely on the federal government to hold their hand and 'prevent' crime (an impossible task) that has gotten fat, dumb, and lazy.
