| WASHINGTON – BP will set aside $20 billion to pay the victims of the massive oil spill in the Gulf, senior administration officials said Wednesday, as President Barack Obama met with the oil giant's top executives. BP is acting under heavy White House pressure in dealing with the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. The independent fund will be directed by lawyer Kenneth Feinberg, who oversaw payments to families of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. At present, Feinberg is known as Obama's "pay czar," setting salary limits for companies getting the most aid from a $700 billion government bailout fund. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100616/ap_on_bi_ge/us_gulf_oil_spill | |

| The government isn't likely to take any of it, but you can bet your ass they will make sure their cronies get taken care of. This 'slush fund' is a joke, and it reeks of cronyism and corruption. | |

| Don't take me a tree huggin soccer fairy here, but the bigger shame is damage to the ocean ecosystem.
20B is a fart in a windstorm to what the real cost will be, but this is one fart smell that windstorm won't be able to take away.
I think it's funny the Fed is going to manage this fund, like the Fed is good at anything else to begin with.....

I suspect that the money paid out to recipients will likely be taxed as income, then taxed again when it's spent. Add in the reimbursements the feds and the Gulf coastal states will get from what they've spent on the cleanup, and the government — federal, state and local — will likely end up with a good 40 percent of what's actually paid out by BP.
