| As the holidays approach, foreign countries are in high gear to provide Americans with cheaply produced goods. Merchandise produced at the expense of American labor. This year, Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that nothing can be found made in America. Who says a gift needs to be wrapped in Chinese wrapping paper? Everyone gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local barber? Or a gym membership? Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? American, locally owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a book of gift certificates. Perhaps the recipient would like their driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or rounds at the local golf course. There are owner-run restaurants all offering gift certificates. Remember, this is not about big national chains. This is about supporting your local home town American communities. How about an oil change for their car, truck, or motorcycle done at a shop run by your local technician? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? The services of a local cleaning lady for a day. Your computer need a tune-up? Find the guy who is struggling to keep his PC repair business running. OK, you were looking for something more personal? Local craft people spin wool and knit them into scarves, they make jewelry, pottery, and jewelry boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner-operated restaurants and leave the waiter a nice tip. Tickets to see a play or concert at your hometown theater. Find a venue showcasing local bands. Do you really need to buy another thousand Chinese lights for Christmas? When you buy a five dollar string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community. Even better, leave the mail man, trash collector, or babysitter a nice tip. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets into foreign accounts. Christmas is now about caring for fellow Americans. Encouraging American small businesses to keep pushing and follow their dreams. When we buy American, we provide for our community, and the benefits come back to us tenfold!
